Taught together with Phlebotomy & Cannulation as one combined course, so you learn every step from cannula to completed infusion — two courses in one, for one fee.

IV therapy is as much about judgement as technique. The course covers pharmacology and rationale, patient assessment and contraindications, product selection, drip assembly and monitoring, complications, consent and the prescribing framework. Because cannulation is taught in the same course, you do not need separate cannulation training first.

Two courses in one
Phlebotomy & Cannulation and IV Therapy are taught together as one combined course, for one fee. You learn venepuncture and peripheral cannulation first, then go straight on to assembling, running and monitoring an IV vitamin infusion — so you leave with the full skill set, from first needle to finished drip.

What You Will Learn

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  1. Assess veins and select a site using palpation and tourniquet technique.
  2. Take blood with vacutainer and butterfly techniques, following the correct order of draw, fill volumes, labelling and sample handling.
  3. Insert, flush and secure a peripheral cannula, with the right gauge selection, flashback and advancement.
  4. Work with aseptic non-touch technique and safe sharps disposal, and follow the sharps-injury protocol.
  5. Assess patients for IV vitamin therapy and recognise contraindications.
  6. Select established IV vitamin products, with awareness of compatibility and stability.
  7. Assemble and prime a drip, manage the infusion rate and monitor the patient throughout.
  8. Recognise and manage complications: haematoma, vasovagal reaction, arterial puncture, nerve contact, infiltration, phlebitis and infusion reactions.
  9. Obtain consent and keep accurate clinical records, within the legal and prescribing framework.

Further Information and FAQs

IV vitamins: prescribing
Most IV vitamin preparations are prescription-only medicines. They may only be given on a valid prescription for a named patient, written by an appropriate prescriber who has personally assessed that patient, or under a Patient Group Direction in which you are named, trained and authorised. Remote prescribing is not accepted for this purpose. Non-prescribers need a genuine working arrangement with a prescriber before practising, and you must confirm your indemnity insurance covers IV practice.
Your certificate and CPD
Your certificate shows your name, the course and date, your pass in the written assessment and a faculty-signed record of practical competency. Our course material is CPD Certified by The CPD Certification Service (Member No. 7006), which confirms the material meets recognised CPD standards; competence is assessed by PHP Training Academy. It is a record of training and assessment rather than a regulated qualification, and it does not by itself establish your ongoing clinical competence. Under the GMC, GDC, NMC and HCPC, CPD is self-directed and self-declared.
Is it really two courses for one fee?
Yes. Phlebotomy & Cannulation and IV Therapy are taught together as one combined course for £750 + VAT (SoMUK members £600).
Do I need to know how to cannulate first?
No. Venepuncture and cannulation are taught in the same combined course, before you move on to IV infusion. If you already cannulate, it will be refreshed and supervised.
Can non-medical practitioners attend?
No. The course is for registered healthcare professionals only — doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists.
Can I give IV vitamins straight after the course?
Only within the prescribing framework. Most IV vitamins are prescription-only medicines, so you need a valid prescription for a named patient from a prescriber who has assessed them, or a Patient Group Direction in which you are named.
Does the course cover mixing my own IV formulations?
No. The course uses established products. It does not cover in-house compounding, custom mixing or sterile formulation from individual components.
